Card counting is a strategy that tracks the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the blackjack shoe. When the deck is rich in high cards (tens, face cards, and aces), the odds shift in the player's favour — blackjacks pay more, the dealer busts more often, and doubling and splitting become more profitable. When the deck is rich in low cards, the reverse is true.
A card counter doesn't memorise every card. Instead, they assign a simple numerical tag to each card and maintain a running total as cards are dealt. That total — called the count — tells them when the shoe is player-favourable and when it isn't. They bet more when it is, and less when it isn't.
Card counting is a legal mental skill. It involves no devices, no cheating, and no cooperation from dealers. It is simply using publicly visible information — the cards on the table — to make better betting decisions.
The technique was first proven mathematically in 1962 by MIT professor Edward O. Thorp in his book Beat the Dealer. The MIT Blackjack Team later used it to win millions across Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The mathematics hasn't changed — the same methods that worked in 1966 still work today in any multi-deck shoe game.
In a standard 6-deck blackjack game with optimal rules (S17, 3:2 payout, DAS allowed), the house edge is approximately −0.46% against a player using perfect basic strategy. That means for every $100 wagered, the house expects to keep about 46 cents on average.
Card counting changes this calculation dynamically. Research by Peter Griffin and others has established that each full true count point above zero adds approximately +0.5% to the player's edge. So:

Hi-Lo (developed by Harvey Dubner in 1963 and refined by Edward Thorp and Julian Braun) is the most widely used card counting system in the world. It uses a simple ±1 tag system that any player can maintain with practice.
Every card in the deck gets a tag. Memorise these three groups:

Notice that Hi-Lo is a balanced system: a full 52-card deck has exactly 20 low cards, 12 neutral cards, and 20 high cards. Sum of all tags = (20 × +1) + (12 × 0) + (20 × −1) = 0. This confirms you've counted correctly when the count returns to zero at the end of a shoe.
As each card is revealed — yours, the dealer's, and other players' — add its tag to a running total in your head. This is the running count. Start at 0 at the beginning of each shoe.
Cards dealt: 5 (+1), K (−1), 2 (+1), 9 (0), A (−1), 4 (+1). Running count: +1 −1 +1 +0 −1 +1 = +1.
With practice, you learn to count in pairs and groups rather than card by card. A 5 and a K together cancel out (+1 −1 = 0) — experienced counters spot these cancellations instantly.
The running count alone isn't enough for an accurate betting signal. A running count of +6 means very different things depending on how many decks are left in the shoe. True count conversion normalises for this:
True Count = Running Count ÷ Decks Remaining
Example: Running count +6 with 3 decks remaining → True Count = +2.
For a rough estimate of decks remaining in a live game, watch the discard tray. A 6-deck shoe with roughly half the cards played has about 3 decks remaining. You don't need precision — rounding to the nearest half-deck is fine.
Use the true count for all betting decisions in balanced systems like Hi-Lo, Hi-Opt II, Omega II, and Wong Halves. The true count accounts for deck depth and gives a consistent, comparable signal at any point in the shoe.
Use the running count for basic strategy deviations in unbalanced systems like KO and ReKO — those systems are specifically designed so that certain running count thresholds (called pivot points) replace the need to perform true count conversion. This makes them faster to use at a live table.
New counters often bet from the running count in a multi-deck game. A running count of +6 with 5 decks remaining is actually weaker than a running count of +3 with 1 deck remaining. Always convert to true count before sizing your bet in a balanced system.
A bet spread is the ratio of your maximum bet to your minimum bet. The wider your spread, the more edge you extract when the count is high — but also the more suspicious your betting pattern looks to casino surveillance.
Most recreational counters use a 1-to-12 unit spread. A common bet ramp based on the true count looks like this:

Flip cards one at a time and say the tag aloud. You should react to a 5 with "+1" and a King with "−1" without thinking. Aim for zero hesitation before moving to counting pairs.
Deal a full 52-card deck into pairs and maintain a running count. At the end, a balanced system (Hi-Lo) must return to exactly 0. If it doesn't, you made an error — go again.
